On April 17, 2018, the Law Enforcement Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, together with FLIGHT, seized 3 protected birds in Bogor regency, West Java (Brahminy Kite, crested hawk-eagle and Falconidae). The birds were confiscated from a car repair shop because the owner did not have permission to keep them. When we raided the premises, we found that the birds had been kept in a small cage for many days. We plan to send the birds to Kamojang eagle Conservation Centre in West Java. Once rehabilitated, they will be released into their habitat in the wild.
FLIGHT has sent a letter to the Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, formally asking him to close Jatinegara Wildlife Market. The letter was sent on April 6, 2018. In the letter, FLIGHT expressed concern about the threat of extinction to birds and other wildlife in Indonesia due to massive thefts that are occurring all across Indonesia. Jakarta houses one of the largest wild life markets in Indonesia. In its Jatinegara wildlife market, cruelty to birds and other wild life is very apparent. Protected birds are openly sold. Long-tailed monkeys are chained by their necks. Cages in which wild life are kept are very small with no food and drink available to their inhabitants. Jatinegara market has an international reputation for being a cruel market. This degrades the image of Jakarta globally. FLIGHT asked the Governor to help wildlife traders in Pasar Jatinegara through its OK-OCE program so that they no longer need to sell wild animals to make a living. The program is a community economic empowerment program in Jakarta. Closing Jatinegara wildlife market will bring a positive impact on birds and other wildlife because this will directly reduce a demand for them. Their theft from nature will also decrease.
