A total of 953 wild birds were seized and rescued within 8 days. These confiscations occurred in two different places, East Java and Lampung. Starting on June 5th, FLIGHT managed to assist the team of Banyuwangi Agricultural Quarantine and Port Area Sector Police (KSKP) of Banyuwangi in rescuing more than 380 wild birds from a smuggling attempt in Banyuwangi, East Java. The birds were found on a trunk of an intercity bus, hidden between passengers’ luggage. The bird species vary, some of them are Orange-headed Thrush, Ashy Tailorbirds, Yellow-vented Bulbuls, White-eyes, Mountain Warbler, etc. All of the birds were brought back to where they came from, Bali, and already released into their natural habitat In the following week, another 519 wild birds were rescued in Banyuwangi Precisely on June 12th, FLIGHT assisted the Ketapang Port Area Sector Police (KSKP) and Surabaya Agricultural Quarantine to rescue a total of 519 wild birds in Ketapang Port, Banyuwangi, East Java. The 519 birds consist of Yellow-vented Bulbuls, White-eyes, Ashy Tailorbirds, Asian Glossy Starlings, Fulvous-chested Jungle Flycatchers, etc. These birds were again, smuggled inside the trunk of an intercity bus. Fortunately, these birds were released back into the wild after some checkups were done. On the 5th month of 2022, FLIGHT successfully rescued approximately 2,000 wild birds and seized 13 kg of pangolin scales by assisting the law enforcement team. These numbers came from 4 operations in Sumatra. The first rescue was on Thursday, 12th May in Riau when an inspection by the Pelalawan Police and Riau Nature Conservation Agency and information by FLIGHT successfully led to a seizing of more than 1000 wild birds. The birds were contained inside 34 boxes and brought with a black car.     The species of birds include 600 Cinereous Tits, 420 Bar-winged Prinias, and 1 Black-naped Oriole. These birds were immediately handed over to the Riau Nature Conservation Agency and already released into the wild.     On Tuesday, May 24th, a joint team of Port Area Sector Police (KSKP) Bakauheni, Bakauheni Agricultural Quarantine, Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and an assist from FLIGHT rescued more than 600 birds in Lampung. These birds were found on two trucks at the entrance of Bakauheni Port   The birds include 160 Javan Mynas, 140 Yellow-vented Bulbuls, 100 Bar-winged Prinias, 80 Long-tailed Shrikes, 77 Maroon-bellied Sunbirds, 30 White-eyes, 6 Lesser Green Leafbirds, etc. These birds were brought from a seller in Palembang and planned to be delivered to a buyer in Cikupa, Tangerang. Amidst the holy month of Ramadan, FLIGHT managed to assist the law enforcement to rescue more than 1800 wild birds Even in the middle of Ramadan, the holy month, the law enforcement managed to rescue more than 1800 wild birds from three (3) seizures from different places in 3 consecutive days. The first confiscation was carried out on Friday, April 15th, 2022 by the Bakauheni Port Special Sector Police (KSKP) at the Bakauheni Port entrance. A total of 1,177 wild birds and also 2 Marmosets and 12 Meerkats. These animals were brought from Medan on the way to Pramuka Bird Market, Jakarta. Some of the bird species brought were White-eyes, Black-naped Orioles, Sunbirds, Brown-cheeked Bulbuls, Blue-masked Leafbirds, Greater and Lesser Green Leafbirds, etc.   The perpetrator, B (45) was now being questioned by the police for his wrongdoing; Meanwhile, some of the birds were already released at the UPTD KPH Way Pisang, and the rest of them were rehabilitated at the Sumatran Wildlife Centre YJSI. The next day on Saturday, 16th of April, FLIGHT successfully assisted the Pelalawan Regional Police to thwart a smuggling attempt of 489 wild birds in Pelalawan, Riau. On Wednesday, 30th March, Tahura WAR and FLIGHT held a training for the community of the Wan Abdul Rachman area at the auditorium of Wan Abdul Rachman. The training was held to help improve the economy of the communities around the forest area. A total of 40 women came as participants. A representative from Tahura WAR, Politeknik Negeri Lampung, FLIGHT, and an entrepreneur also came as speakers. The topic of the training is regarding Banana Chips Production and the Marketing Techniques. Banana is known as one of the most produced agricultural products by forest farmers. All of the activities were done as one of our community development programs. Aimed at improving the quality of life of the communities, FLIGHT formulated this program based on focus group discussions and training with the relevant communities (Forest Farmers) to identify their underlying needs and the corresponding solutions. Support activities may include sustainable agriculture and food product and/or handicraft production for alternative income. FLIGHT strives to develop the communities who understood the stakes of our biodiversity and manage to guard the ecosystem surrounding their lives. Our ultimate goal is to alter their main income from hunting and/or bird trading to farming and production.
