Sulawesi Region Law Enforcement Unit of Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), Baubau Police and Southeast Sulawesi BKSDA, thanks to FLIGHT’s support, successfully thwarted the smuggling of 31 Sulphur-crested cockatoos and 1 Moluccan eclectus in Baubau on Saturday, 4 November 2023. The operation team managed to rescue the birds from passenger ship of NGGAPULU. The birds were lowered from the ship to the smuggler’s boat using a rope. A major trader was arrested. The perpetrator faces a sentence of 5 years in prison based on Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Their Ecosystems Currently, the birds have been handed over to the Southeast Sulawesi BKSDA Rescue Center in Kendari for further handling so that they can be returned to their natural habitat in Maluku.
On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, FLIGHT paid a friendly visit to the Indonesian quarantine agency in Jakarta. The visit was to conduct a more in-depth discussion on saving protected wildlife, especially birds from illegal wildlife trade and to tighten our synergy with Indonesian Government Authorities Nabila Fatma as the Director of Communication of FLIGHT was presented a placard to the Head of the center for Animal Quarantine and Biosafety, Wisnu Wasisa Putra,DVM., M.Sc as a form of appreciation for the commitment and active role of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency in enforcement and saving plants and wildlife especially Birds in Indonesia. FLIGHT and The Indonesian Quarantine Agency are agree that we should protect Indonesian birds from illegal hunting and smuggling, so the population of the beautiful creatures like Indonesian birds not continue to decrease until they eventually become extinct. Up to now, FLIGHT has been actively supporting the efforts of quarantine officers in several regions, such as Lampung Quarantine and Surabaya Quarantine, to prevent the smuggling of wildlife, especially birds. As we know, illegal wildlife trade not only threatens the extinction of many species, but can also increase the risk of spreading zoonoses, which are diseases that can be naturally transmitted from animals to humans or vice versa. Therefore, FLIGHT’s support of Quarantine’s work is also aimed at creating a healthy society and environment.
On October 30, one of the representatives from FLIGHT appeared as a wittness in the trial of the Ilegal Trade case of dozens of protected birds at the Tanjung Karang Court, Bandar Lampung. On August 8, 2023, defendants Ridho and Sujarot were arrested by Officers from the law Enforcement unit,MoEF for Attempting to smuggle dozens of protected birds from Riau to Lampung. The two defendants were threatened with a sentence of 5 years in prison based on Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Resources and their Ecosystems. From January to October 2023, according to our records, at least courts in Indonesia have convicted 65 illegal wildlife trade cases. Of the 65 cases, 26 of them were illegal trade in wild birds, with more than 1600 birds of various species confiscated by the Authorities. The confiscated birds are currently undergoing rehabilitation before being released into their natural habitat
On Friday, October 13rd 2023,FLIGHT Supported UPTD KPHK TAHURA WAR to educate High School Students of Al Karim Nature School about songbird conservation efforts in Wan Abdul Rachman Great Forest Park. This aims to create an understanding of the importance of protecting and conserving wildlife, especially songbird in their natural habitat. They also get an explanation about how take care the birds at our rescue and rehabilitation center are treated and let them try how to bird watching and take them walk to healing forest or camping ground so they can studying and having fun as well. On October 25 – 27th, 2023, a 2nd Grade Primary School Students of Al Karim Nature School also visit Wan Abdul Rachman Great Forest Park to study. The students get an Education about the importance of animals welfare and conservation and gave them knowledge about various species of Birds in Indonesia especially the birds at our center in Abdul Rachman Great Forest Park. An early age education is expected to be able to help us to save birds in the future.
On Wednesday, October 18 2023, FLIGHT together with Management Unit of Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park (Tahura WAR) visited the Sumber Maju II Group in Tanjung Agung Village, Lampung. The location of Tanjung Agung Village is close to the Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park area. Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park is Nature Conservation Area for the purpose of collecting natural or artificial plants and/or animals, native and/or non-native species, which are used for research, science and education purposes and support cultivation, culture, tourism and recreation. Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park as a conservation forest area with an area of ±22,245.50 hectare. Sumber Maju group II is one of the groups that participated in the Community Development Coaching Program convened by FLIGHT and UPTD Tahura WAR by providing knowledge and skills in utilizing and processing forest natural resouces. Sumber Maju Group II received banana processing tools and used them well to make a banana chips using unripe banana parts. Marison Guciano as Executive Director of Flight also provided awareness to them to not hunting the wild animals, especially birds in forest areas so that the forest ecosystem can remains sustainable.
