On 1st July of 2021 FLIGHT assisted the Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and Lampung Police stopped a smuggling attempt of 190 birds on the highway of Lampung, Indonesia. We found 190 birds secured inside 5 fruit boxes and 4 card boxes. These birds were transported with DAMRI bus with BD 7607 CZ license plate number. The 190 birds were consists of 120 Tits, 50 Oriental White-eyes, and 20 Blue-masked Leafbirds. We already released the 170 of the birds to the Wan Abdul Rahman Forest Park, which consists of Tits and the Oriental White-eyes. Meanwhile for the rest of the birds, the 20 Blue-masked Leafbirds were still undergoing rehabilitation in Lamping Animal Rescue Center.
On Tuesday, 22nd June 2021, Lampung Regional Police together with Bengkulu Nature Conservation Agency and FLIGHT successfully thwarted the illegal smuggling of 3726 birds. The truck with BE 8732 GP license plate number was running away from the police inspection. After the chase, it was confirmed that the truck was containing 3726 birds, 36 of them were under protection. Some of the bird that was brought was Hill Myna, Crested Jay, Lesser Green Leafbird, Blue-winged Leafbird, Greater Green Leafbird, Temminck’s Sunbird, and Red-crowned Barbet. These birds are planned to be released on Wan Abdul Rahman Forest Park, Lampung after rehabilitation while the perpetrators, BA (38) and B (22) were under investigation.
2083 Birds from different species seized by Cilegon Police, Nature Conservation Agency, and Cilegon Agricultural Quarantine with an assist from FLIGHT
As many as 2083 birds from different species were going to be smuggled from Lampung to Banten, thankfully, the smuggling was successfully thwarted by Cilegon Police, Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and Cilegon Agricultural Quarantine with an assist from FLIGHT. On Wednesday (09/06/2021) at 4 AM, officers from Sector Police of KSKP Merak secured a colt truck containing 2083 birds. Based on the description of the perpetrator (ST), these birds will be shipped to Serang and Tangerang. Cilegon Police already coordinated with the Cilegon Agricultural Quarantine to do health screening for the birds, after the screening they planning on releasing the birds to the protected forest in the nature preserve area of Mancak District. The perpetrator was subjected to a violation of Article 40 Juncto, Article 2A and 2B of Law No. 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Living Resources and Their Ecosystem with a maximum of 2 years of jail time, and also Law No. 21 of 2019 concerning Quarantine of Animals, Fish, and Plants with maximum 3 years of jail time and 3 billion rupiahs fine.
Ministry of Environment and Forestry Released 4 White-bellied Sea Eagle to Celebrate World Biodiversity Day
Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry together with Bangka Belitung Islands Regional Police, Director General of Law Enforcement, and Deputy Governor of Bangka Belitung released 2 pairs of White-bellied sea eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster) to the Munjang Mangrove Protected Forest Area on Monday, 24th May 2021. The 4 individuals of sea eagle named Gab, Bek, Par, and Pad was given from Gabek, Pangkal Pinang and Parit Padang, and Sungailuat residents from the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. White-bellied sea eagle was listed as a protected species from the Regulation of Ministry of Environment and Forestry Number P.106/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/12/2018. Their distribution ranged from Karimun Jawa Islands, Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, Kalimantan, Java, to Maratua Island. Before the release, the 4 white-bellied sea eagle were going through an 18-month rehabilitation at the Animal Rescue Center and also habituation process for one month at the release site. The Law Enforcement (Gakkum) from Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Jabalnusra area had settled Trigana Air Boeing 737 Series 300 PK-YSN pilot (AS) as the suspect for smuggling of 180 wild birds illegally from Papua to Halim Perdanakusuma Airport. The case started when a Nature Conservation Agency (BKSDA) officer in Jakarta received an information from Military Police Air Force Base (POM AU) of Halim Perdanakusuma regarding shipping hundred of birds from Sentani Papua to Jakarta through Halim Perdanakusuma airport. Evidence of 180 wild birds were secured in Tegal Alur Animal Rescue Center. The 180 wild birds that suffer from smuggling attempt consisted of 6 Great Black Cockatoo, 5 Pesquet’s Parrot, 1 Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, 44 Orange-billed Lorikeet, 10 Eclectus Parrot, 8 Brown Lory, 16 Greater Bird-of-paradise, 2 Twelve-wired Bird-of-paradise, and 88 Black-capped Lory. The perpetrators were presumed violating Article 40 Jo, Article 21 Verse 2 A of Law No 5 Year 1990 on Conservation of the Living Natural Resources and its Ecosystem, charged with maximum 5 years in jail and maximum fine of 100 Million Rupiahs fine.
