In early 2023, we completed the construction of a songbird rehabilitation center located in Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park, Lampung. This center was built with the aim of caring for confiscated songbirds that are sick and unable to fly because their wings were damaged by poacher traps.
This center was established within Wan Abdul Rahman Grand Forest Park with financial support from the Animals Asia Foundation. FLIGHT and the Wan Abdul Rahman Grand Forest Park Management Unit have an MoU to collaborate in protecting wild birds and their habitats.
Covering about 22,245.50 hectares, Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park is a conservation forest that combines protection, preservation, and utilization efforts, making it a key location for releasing birds.
Until July 2024, thousands of confiscated songbirds were cared for at this center. Most of them have recovered and have been released into the wild.
Why Lampung?
We established this center in Lampung, southern Sumatra, because it is a major transit route for smuggling Sumatran songbirds destined for Java. The Bakauheni Seaport in Lampung acts as the main exit point, making it a suitable location to combat illegal wildlife trafficking.
In the past five years, authorities in Lampung have rescued approximately 200,000 songbirds from illegal wildlife trade and smuggling attempts. This region has the highest intensity and volume of wildlife confiscations in the entire country.
