Another Attempt to smuggle hundreds of birds from Sumatra to java has been Foiled by Authorities. A truck carrying 326 birds was seized at the Bakauheni Port in Lampung on Wednesday night (April 23, 2025). 

The operation was a result of collaboration between the Lampung Quarantine Agency, POLAIRUD Baharkam Polri, and the non-governmental organization FLIGHT Protecting Indonesia’s Birds. The truck was found to be carrying various species of birds without a legal documents. “Out of the total 326 birds, 132 of them are protected species,” said the Director of Polairud Polda Lampung, Kombes Pol Bobby Paludin Tambuna, on Friday (April 25, 2025).

The birds were found in dozens of boxes hidden in the driver’s cabin.
Some of the protected bird species included Sunbirds, Blue-winged Leafbirds, etc. Additionally, other bird species such as Crimson Sunbird, Bearded Warbler, and others were also found.

The truck was reportedly from Pekanbaru, and the driver claimed to be carrying a consignment intended for East Jakarta and Bekasi. All the birds have been secured by the quarantine authorities for further examination and handling. The driver and vehicle are currently under investigation. The perpetrator can be charged under Law No. 21/2019 on Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine, with a potential penalty of 2 years in prison and a fine of up to IDR 2.000.000,-
