Throughout September, we recorded approximately 20 cases of illegal wildlife trade that were successfully thwarted by the Authorities. The smuggling of illegal Animals out of their habitats not only occurred within the country, but also the smuggling and possession of protected animals from Indonesia was also successfully handled in Thailand. This proves that the illegal wildlife trade network is vast.
During the month of September, more than 3,100 birds of various species were rescued, mainly songbirds and parrots. 97% of the confiscated birds were songbirds and the rest were Parrots, Cockatoos, and Cassowaries. In addition to birds, more than 150 protected reptiles and mammals, as well as body parts such as deer and turtle horns, were seized, and approximately 200 eggs were also confiscated by the Authorities.
The majority of smuggled Songbird species originated from the island of Sumatra, while the majority of croocked Beaked and Reptile species were found in Eastern Indonesia such as Maluku and Papua.
The increasing attention of the government and the existence of a legal basis for violating Law No. 5 of 1990, which regulates protected animals in Indonesia, still does not scare and deter some irresponsible individuals who knowingly commit crimes again.
