Total of 1,028 birds without official documents were confiscated by Lampung Quarantine officers in collaboration with FLIGHT: Protecting Indonesia’s Birds at Bakauheni Port on Tuesday night (1/10/2024) at around 8:00 pm. The birds, consisting of various species, were found in 27 white plastic boxes transported using a sand truck with the police number BE 9682 AU. Head of the Lampung Quarantine Center’s Bakauheni Service Unit, Akhir Santoso, said that his office managed to secure the wildlife thanks to intensive monitoring with FLIGHT. “We stopped the smuggling of these birds after counting and identifying them, totaling 1.028 birds,” he said when contacted on Wednesday (2/10/2024).

The inspection was carried out when officers were watching the port and suspected a truck loaded with sand. Upon inspection, boxes containing birds without official documents were found.
As a result, the birds were immediately secured and will be handed over to the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) for further handling.

During the inspection, the confiscated birds consisted of various species, including 8 the Brown-breasted jungle Flycatcher, 15 the bearded bul-bul, 1 siri-siri, 14 Mandarin Poksay Bird, 360 Zosterops, 450 Merbah Pojokcuk, and 180 the long-tailed shrike.

Adi Saputra, the truck driver and resident of Wates, Central Lampung, admitted that he intended to smuggle the birds to Kemis Market, Tangerang. He has been taken into custody for questioning, while the confiscated birds have been released around Mount Rajabasa, South Lampung.

FLIGHT’s Executive Director, Marison Guciano, emphasized that the attempt to smuggle thousands of birds from Sumatra was illegal because it was not accompanied by a Domestic Plant and Animal Transport Certificate (SATS-DN) or a health certificate from the Quarantine Center.

This action also poses a high risk of spreading zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, and threatens the conservation of birds in Sumatra.
