The smuggling of 2,830 Sumatran songbirds of various species was foiled at the Executive Dock of Bakauheni Port, Lampung, on Thursday (2/15). The smuggling of thousands of birds without official documents was foiled by a joint team of Lampung Quarantine, Army Military Police and Flight Protecting Birds.
Head of Lampung Quarantine, Donni Muksydayan, said the arrest of thousands of illegal birds began with a report from a local resident regarding a planned shipment of bird species to Java. After receiving the report, the Bakauheni Port Service Unit immediately prepared and stood guard in the area around Bakauheni Port.
Then, on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at around 5:43 pm, officers found a vehicle with the characteristics that had been informed entering the Bakauheni Port Executive Dock area.
“Upon inspection, thousands of birds were found packed in plastic baskets and cardboard boxes with holes in them,” he said, Saturday (2/17).
Donni continued, when asked about the birds’ documents, the driver could not show the required documents. “The driver claimed that the animals came from Palembang and were destined for Serang and Depok,” he said. The smuggling of thousands of birds without official documents was foiled at Bakauheni Port, Lampung.
“After further identification, the birds consisted of 45 Black-naped orioles, 1,700 Javan Myna, 875 Yellow-vented bulbul, 150 Bar-winged prinia, 14 Purple-throated Sunbird, 34 Shrike, 5 Common Iora, 7 Malaysian pied fantail,” he continued.
Donni said the driver was secured for further questioning. According to him, after thwarting the illegal animal trade, the quarantine immediately coordinated with BKSDA Bengkulu, Region III Section in Lampung to ensure the safety of the animals and their immediate release.
“The perpetrator is suspected of violating Article 88 of Law No. 21/2019 on Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine. The perpetrator is subject to a 2-year sentence and a 2 billion rupiah fine,” he concluded.
