Thursday, October 28th, 2021, officers of Riau Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) with an assist from FLIGHT halted a smuggling attempt in Palas, Pekanbaru.
Starting from the community report on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, around 09.00 AM, that there will be a delivery of birds originating from the coastal areas of West Sumatra through travel. BBKSDA Riau and FLIGHT immediately followed up the report by monitoring the movement of the travel. At around noon, the BBKSDA Riau and FLIGHT conducted an ambush in the Palas area, Pekanbaru. The team found 8 cardboard boxes containing birds and asked for information from the travel driver. Then the driver and the boxes were brought to the office of BBKSDA Riau altogether for more questioning.
The driver informed that the bird was owned by someone from Pasaman, West Sumatra, and will be delivered to an unknown person. The driver also said that he didn’t know the bird he was carrying and only received a delivery fee of Rp.200,000,-
After identification, there are 39 birds in total, of which only 37 of them are alive. Out of 39 birds, some were categorized as Protected birds, including the Blue-Winged Leafbird (Chloropsis moluccensis) and the Greater Green Leafbird (Chloropsis sonnerati). Some are still in the process of identification. These birds were planned to be released after the identification process was done.
