1.522 songbirds without document was secured by The Port Police (KSSP) with Bakauheni Agricultural Quarantine Class 1 assisted by Flight at Bakauheni Port on Sunday, August 23, 2020.
Thousands of birds from various species in 35 fruit baskets and 13 boxes were secured from the the cross-island passenger bus “Handoyo” with police number AA-1413-CA at the port entrance around 07.30 WIB.

The plan is that birds from Pekanbaru, Riau will be smuggled to Jakarta. Kanitreskim (KSSP) Bakauheni, Ipda musholih representing The Head of KSSP Bakauheni, AKP Ferdiansyah said that the custody of wild birds without legal document was revealed from raids on vehicles crossing Merak Port.

“When we checked the bus trunk, we found 48 packages containing wild birds without legal documents. So that we do confiscation and further investigation, ” said Ipda Musholih as quoted by Lampost.co.

From the results of the examination, the bus driver, Gunawan (58) from Boyolali, Central Java, admitted that he brought thousands of birds from various species such as copper-throated Sunbirds, Celebes Hanging Parrot, Parakeet, Blue-winged Leafbird, Bar-winged Prinia, Black Magpie, Crimson Sunbird and Turtledove.

“The birds are transported from Pekanbaru, Riau to Jakarta at a cost of Rp 100.000/package,” said Gunawan. According to Ipda Musholih, Gunawan’s actions violated Article 35 jo. Article 88 of Law No. 21 of 2019 concerning Fish, Animal and Plant Quarantine. The perpetrator is also threatened with imprisonment of up to 2 years and a maximum fine of Rp

“In The regulation, the problem of every bird that carried across islands must be equipped with the required official documents. However, the delivery of birds from Pekanbaru, to Jakarta was not equipped with valid documents, “said Ipda Musholih to the media.

After going through health checks, thousands of confiscated birds were released by Lampung Agricultural Quarantine Centre Class 1,Lampung Natural Resources Conservation Centre (BKSDA) and Lampung Department of Forestry assisted by FLIGHT at Wan Abdul Rahman Forest Park, Lampung.
